Cherished as a local landmark for many years, this stone building was originally the home of the Starsmore family. It was purchased by the City of Colorado Springs and moved to its present location in 1992. It serves as an introduction to Cheyenne Cañon Park and its beautiful waterfalls, rock formations, wildflowers and wildlife. Here you will discover activities for guests of all ages.
Volunteer opportunities are available for the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center and Helen Hunt Falls.

(Preschool- ages 3-5)
This program introduces the children to Andy the puppet and the five senses-touch, hear, sight, taste, and smell. Children are introduced to Andy’s animal puppet friends and they learn about their special senses. This program features hands-on activities and a walk around Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center.

Children learn about Colorado wildlife and their specialized senses that help them survive. Students will participate in hands on activities using their senses to discover nature in the park.

Tipi Raising and Ute Heritage Program/Hike option
This program involves pulling travois, setting up a Ute tipi and learning about the way of life of the native Ute people through these interactive, hands-on experiences. The children break up into groups learning about art and painting with yucca fronds, Ute history, passing around artifacts inside the tipi, the Bear Dance, making a glass beaded bracelet and participating in the friendship dance.

Ute Children Program
The children will learn about the Ute Indian culture. The students will have hands on experiences learning about Ute cooking, painting with yucca fronds, passing around Indian artifacts, participate in a friendship dance and make a beaded bracelet to take home.

Discover the Plant Kingdom
(Grades 5-6) Available in September and May only
Students learn the classification of plants and why other organisms are in other kingdoms. They will begin with a power point presentation and then sort leaves, view spores, pollen, pistols and stamen under a microscope, dissect monocot vs dicot seeds, go into the garden looking at parts of a flower and go for a hike to view the flowering vs non flowering plants, and those organisms that are not plants.

Golden Prospects/Hike option (hike also for groups over 50)
Students learn the technique of panning for gold in North Cheyenne Creek, what gold looks like among the fools and gem hunt in gold pans and take home the treasures. . We discuss the history of the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859; discover items from the 1800’s prospector’s pack.

Children discover insects that lurk in the leaf litter, hang out in the trees, hide in the creek, and fly with amazing wings. They will also view our wonderful insect display in Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center. It’s all hands-on and who knows what kind of little creature you will uncover.

Find out about the fascinating animals that are wildlife “neighbors” in Colorado Springs. The students learn about the components of a good habitat and discover some animals through our habitat logs. The children will also go on a habitat hike in our park.
