Colorado Springs, CO – On December 7, 2018, at approximately 6:12 a.m., the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 390 Wedgewood Court. En route, responding companies were able to see a large plume of smoke and flame lengths of 20-30 feet. Responding companies initiated the working structure fire protocol while still before arriving. Fire companies arrived at a 4-story wood-framed single-family residence with smoke and fire showing from multiple windows and doors on three sides of the structure. Command called for a second alarm due to the extent of the fire, potential for wildland interface fires, and a delay in the water supply as one hydrant was inside of an evergreen bush and the second hydrant tapped was not functional.

The two people living in residence were awakened by working smoke alarms and were able to self-extricate with their dog before CSFD arrival.  Command decided the fire was to be attacked from a defensive posture (from outside the structure) as the structure was untenable due to a well-advanced fire. Water was on fire within 3 minutes of arrival and called under control by 7:21 a.m.

There were no civilian injuries or firefighter injuries reported during this event while the family will be displaced from their home for the foreseeable future as the damage was extensive. Fire Investigators were called to the scene, and after a thorough investigation, the fire was determined to originate at or near the gas grill. Due to the extensive damage, it is difficult to be precise on all the details surrounding the ignition.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) want to remind our citizens. Gas grills are involved in an average of 7,900 home fires per year, including 3,300 structure fires and 4,700 outdoor fires annually. Leaks or breaks were primarily a problem with gas grills. Leaks or ruptures caused twelve percent of gas grill structure fires and 24% of outside gas grill fires. Follow this link for all gas grill bbq safety information and stats:
