City to host community meeting on wildfire, flash flooding, geological hazards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management will host two meetings in Colorado Springs to increase awareness for wildfire, flash flooding, geological hazards and emergency preparedness this spring. Colorado Springs residents are encouraged to attend one of the following community meeting:

Colorado Springs, CO 80906

Officials from the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management, Colorado Springs Fire Department, Colorado Springs Police Department, and Water Resources Engineering Division will lead these discussions.

Specific topics include:

  •        Spring-Summer 2019 Forecast
  •        Flood Mitigation Reducing the Wildfire Risk
  •        Evacuation Planning
  •        Geological hazards to include landslides

Several organizations will host booths and displays to provide information on a variety of topics related to emergency preparedness and natural hazards.

“In recent years Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region have experienced both wildfire and flash flooding that have devastated parts of our community, and serve as a reminder that we continue to live with the threat of wildfire and the aftermath of flash flooding,” said Jim Reid, Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management director. “These meetings offer a great opportunity to learn more about natural hazards in our area and to receive information and resources to help prepare their family and property in the event they may need to leave their home in an emergency.”

In addition to attending the community meeting, residents are encouraged to download the City’s Emergency Preparedness and Safety Guide for information on how to prepare for wildfire, flash flooding and all types of emergencies.

The Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management (PPR-OEM) serves the entire community of El Paso County and Colorado Springs. The regional office serves as a single point of contact during major incidences to enhance communication both during and after an event. The establishment of the PPR-OEM in January 2019 will allow the city and county to more effectively coordinate and assist first responders in an emergency as well as preparing the government and the community for a disaster.
