The City of Colorado Springs has specific and useful data that it generates while doing the community’s business. Locations of City assets, shapes of parks/trails/buildings, financial activity—all are useful for the City government to conduct its business, but these datasets are also valuable public assets. Communities are using open public data to address community issues, understand City government, and even build local businesses. Transparency, responsiveness, and accountability in the 21st century rely on opening up the ‘black box’ of City government.

Certain assets should be treated carefully to protect sensitive data, and there are considerations when sharing data generated in conducting public business.

OpenDataCOS is the City’s initiative to begin sharing appropriate and useful data with the community and facilitating community engagement by leveraging this data to improve our community.
